Origins of the Caesar Salad
Contrary to popular belief, the Caesar salad did not originate in ancient Rome, nor was it named after Julius Caesar himself. In fact, the Caesar salad’s creation can be traced back to the early 20th century.
It was the year 1924 when Caesar Cardini, an Italian-born chef, created the first Caesar salad. Cardini owned a restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico, which often attracted American tourists during the Prohibition era. Legend has it that on the Fourth of July weekend in 1924, Cardini was faced with a depleted kitchen and had to concoct a dish from the remaining ingredients. With limited options, he combined romaine lettuce, croutons, Parmesan cheese, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, and Worcestershire sauce to create the now-iconic salad.
